Domain-Mapped Curriculum
All seven courses in the prep course series—including six domain-specific modules and a capstone practice exam—are strategically structured with contact hours proportional to actual exam weight. No fluff, no guessing. Just targeted content that mirrors what you'll actually face on test day.
Theory Made Practical
From psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral approaches to art therapy-specific frameworks like the Expressive Therapies Continuum, you'll learn not just the concepts but how they show up in real exam scenarios. Recall, application, and critical thinking—all covered.
Built for Your Success
Whether you're an ATR taking the exam for the first time or an ATR-BC recertifying, this series meets you where you are. Flexible, comprehensive, and designed by experts who understand exactly what the ATCBE® demands.
About This Course
Theoretical Approaches make up 10% of the ATCBE — 15 scored questions that many candidates miss not because they don't know the material, but because they studied theories in isolation instead of learning to discriminate between them in clinical scenarios. The 2025 exam doesn't just ask "What is CBT?" It gives you a client vignette and asks which framework the therapist is using, what an art therapist working from that framework would do next, or which theorist the intervention traces back to. That's recall, application, and mastery — and it requires a different kind of studying. This course organizes all fifteen-plus tested approaches into four memorable clusters, shows you how each appears in exam-style vignettes, and gives you a 20-question practice quiz with full rationales.
About Your Instructors
Our course is designed and taught by experienced art therapists and credentialing experts who have walked this path themselves. We understand the pressure of exam prep—the anxiety of wondering if you're covering everything, the frustration of generic study materials that don't speak to art therapy specifically, the urgency of getting this right. We created this program because we've been there, and we know exactly what works. Dr. Penny Orr, the instructor of this course, combines deep clinical knowledge, current research, and years of exam preparation experience to guide you through every domain with clarity and confidence. We're not just here to deliver content; we're here to help you succeed.

What You Will Learn in Each Module
Module 1: Psychodynamic & Depth Approaches Psychoanalytic and Jungian foundations, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and attachment theory — the language of symbols, the unconscious, and the therapeutic relationship, plus how these concepts show up in artwork-interpretation questions. Module 2: Cognitive-Behavioral & Change Models CBT, ACT, DBT, and behavioral therapy; Motivational Interviewing, the Transtheoretical Model, and Stages of Change; solution-focused therapy. Learn the distinguishing features the exam uses to separate these commonly confused approaches. Module 4: Art Therapy–Specific & Contemporary Frames The Expressive Therapies Continuum (a favorite exam topic — covered in depth), trauma-informed and somatic approaches, positive psychology, feminist/social justice and socially engaged practice, and environmental/eco-therapy approaches.
